Types of Lens Coatings

Choosing the right lenses is a great start. Now you can enhance those lenses with special coatings and treatments that add extra benefits. Lens coatings are thin transparent layers applied to the lens surface (or built into the lens material) that can make your glasses perform even better in everyday life. Just like you might add protective wax to a car or a case to your phone, coatings give your lenses extra functionality: they can cut down glare, resist scratches, block UV light, and even adjust to changing light conditions. Let’s explore a few common lens coatings and why you might love having them on your glasses:

Glass

High Index Lenses

High-index lenses are all about making your glasses thinner and lighter without compromising vision. If you have a strong prescription, you might recall older glasses with very thick, heavy lenses. High-index lens materials bend light more efficiently, so you can achieve the same prescription in a much thinner lens. For example, someone with a strong nearsighted prescription who used to have “Coke-bottle” thick lenses can now get high-index lenses that look slim and stylish. Thinner lenses look better in your frames and often weigh less, meaning they’re more comfortable for long-term wear (no more slipping down your nose as much). Because high-index lenses are so good at bending light, they can sometimes reflect more light too, so adding an anti-reflective coating is often recommended.
